꽃이 피어나고 있었다.

몸의 안에서부터, 나무가 자라나고 있었다.

"왜."

그 떨리는 교수의 말소리에서부터, 그는 교수들은 그 현상을 모른다는 걸 인지한다.

...이 병원에서 당직을 서는 의무과 교수들이 있을 것임에도 그들은 그러한가.

"왜, 이런 것이, 안에서...? "

그저 그 몸의 안에서 어떤 초월적인 힘도 느껴지지 않는 나무가 자라나고.

붉은 꽃이 가지에 매달리며, 이윽고 그 안에서 열매를 맺을 뿐.

꽃잎 속에 맺힌 것을 느끼면서 그는 손으로 마른 세수를 했다.

그 형상을 알아차릴 수 있었다.

"석류, 나무 ? "

혈실血實이라고 불린 것이 무엇인지를 이해할 수 있었다는 이야기였다.

아예 마천희 자체를 잡아먹은 것처럼 피어난 그 나무를 뒤로 한 채 그는 성봉에게 말을 건넨다.

"돌아갑시다."

저것을 본 이상 만나야 했다.

"여기 있는 것도 망자에 대한 예의는 아닐 테니까."

그 현상에 대해 알 것이라 여겨지는, 도일살을.

그의 휠체어를 밀면서, 성봉이 말이 없어졌다.

구름다리를 천천히 지나간다. 사람 하나가 죽었는데 하늘은 맑았다.

사실, 사람이 수백, 수천, 수만명 죽어도 하늘은 언제나 맑았다.

"수녀님."

그렇지만 정작 그의 휠체어를 밀어주는 수녀의 마음이 이리 어두워서야.

그가 그것을 보면서 그리 가만히 있을 수가 있을까.

마음이 불편했다. 죄책감...엇비스무리한 감정이 느껴지고 있다.

'아마 성봉의 서큐버스적인 측면에 영향을 받고 있는 거라 생각하지만.'

딱히, 그것에 개의치는 않았다.

왜냐하면 성봉이 그에게 해준 것이 흔치 않다는 것 즈음은 알고 있었으니까.

"기분이 안 좋으시다면, 제가 병실이나 아래층까지는 홀로 갈 수 있습니다."

"아니, 아니에요. 데려다 드릴게요."

"그걸 넘어서, 홀로 풀리지 않을 만큼 상심하셨다면.

그렇게 홀로 아랫층으로 가는 것 대신에 말을 들어드릴 수도 있습니다."

"네...? "

"이러나 저러나, 수녀님에게는 고해를 들어주신만큼의 빚이 있지 않습니까."

거기에 더해서, 구명求命의 은이 있었으며, 그것조차 넘어서 목숨의 빚이 있다.

그가 어제 죽여버린 그 한 순간의 빚을 그는 잊지 않는다.

"저를 생각해서 움직인 것이 아닙니까."

어느샌가 구름다리의 초입에 돌아와, 마천희와 같이 동귀어진 하던 그때를 생각한 채.

그는 성봉의 울 것 같은 울적한 표정을 올려다보았다.

"겪을 필요가 없던 우울한 일을 겪게 해드렸으니, 그 정도는 해드려야지요."

과연 그 울적한 표정이 그 때문일지는 모르겠지만...나름대로 그도 최선을 다한 것이다.
