"그럴 수,"

말을 들으며, 스스로를 관조했던 결과에 대해서도 무심결에 떠오르고 있었다.

'양자택일이 싫었나.'

그래.

이런 상황에 처한 게 싫었다.
이런 상황에서 상대가 자신에게 앞으로의 소중한 것의 가치를 정하라고 말하는 것이, 싫었다.

왜냐하면 나에게는 소중한 것이 없기 때문이다.

순간의 감정에 이끌려서, 목숨조차도 내팽개치고.
상대를 고른 시점에서 나는 그 말의 정답이 무엇인지 깨닫고 있었다.

"없겠네."

그냥 없었던 것이다.

"내게는 그 저울에 올릴 것이 없었어. 없으니까 그냥 마음대로 한거겠지."

목숨이 소중하다고 생각할만한 가치 있는 것을 가지고 있지않으니 행동의 동인이 그 순간의 감정뿐이었다.

"진연서는 그런 존재였던 거야. 나는 그런 존재인거야."

목숨의 위기 앞에서야 직시하는 나의 내면이라는 건 놀라울정도로 공허하고.
그 병원에서 살기위해 발악했던 것이 추레할 정도로 하찮았다.

비어있다.

"인생의 행복을 느끼기에는, 분명히 삶이 가혹하고 너무 짧았던 까닭일까? 그렇게 믿고싶네."

외면하고 싶었던 나의 본심을 바라보며.

나는 눈 앞의 사람에게 그것을 고했다.

"나는 소중한 게 없으니까. 저울에 잴 수가 없어."

"그래서 대답하기 싫었던거야."

그러지 않으면 외면 할 수 없으니까.
나 자신이라는 존재에게, 채워넣어야 할 것이 너무 많음을 이미 말해야했으니까.

조소가 지어졌다.

"그러니까 당신이, 지금 이 순간까지도 내게 그것을 묻고 있노라면."

싫다.

지금 이 모든 것이 싫다.

나 자신을 들여다보는 나 자신이 싫다.
내게 대답을 강요하고, 아직 보지 못한 소중한 것을 논하며 내게 말하라하는 당신이 싫다.

그리고.

이런 존재를 세상에 던져놓고 아무것도 주지않는 이 세상이 싫다.

그 모든 것을 증오한다.

그러함에도, 바라는 것이다.

"그만큼의 분노를 참으면서도 내게 그것을 물어볼만한 가치를 보고 있다 하면."

왜냐하면 내가 지금까지 했던 모든 행동이 자가당착이었다는 것을.
나는 지금에서야 깨닫고 있었다.

그래.

그녀에게 했던 모든 행동은, 누군가가 나에게 해주길 바랬던 것이다.

…아무도 내가 힘내가면서 살았다고 말해주지 않아.

이 질박하고 내게 무관심한 세상은, 나에게 아무것도 바라지않아.
내가 원하는 것이 있다고 들어주려고 하지않아.

"당신이 내게 소중해줬으면 좋겠어."

"나를 구했던 당신에게 의미가 있기를 원해."

"내가 구한 사람들이 내가 그러했던 것처럼 행동해주길 원해."

그것이 불가능한 이야기라는 건 누구보다도 내가 가장 잘 안다.

"당신이 무엇을 위해 움직이는지 따위는, 몰라."

그러나 나는 말하고 싶었다.
당신이 하는 행동만큼, 당신도 누군가에게 그렇게 대해질 것이라는 것을.

그렇기에.

"당신은 나에게 무엇을 보여주고 싶은가요?"

"당신은 내가 불가능한 꿈을 놓으라고 말하고 싶어해요."

"유감이에요. 나는 그 꿈을 꾸고만 있을뿐. 그게 정확히 무엇인지 정하지 못했기에."

"나는 그 말에 대답 할 수 없었기에, 이런 지금의 진심을 보고 싶지 않았기에."

웃었다.
조소가 멈추지 않는다.
입가에 걸린 미소가.

나와 모두에게 지어지는 웃음이 멈추지 않는다.

"그러니까 회피한거겠죠. 그러니까."

"당신이 보여주고 싶은 것은 무엇인가요?"

"내게 보여줄건가요?"

"당신이 말했던 그 수억명보다 무거운 무언가가 존재 할 수 있다는 것을."

"세상 전체보다도 때로는 한 사람이 더 귀할 수도 있음을."

당신은 알고있는건가.

중얼거림은 메아리조차 되지 못하고 흩어지겠지.

"보여줘."

그럼에도 바란다.

그렇기에 가치 있는 걸 가지고, 그 마음 속에 채워넣기를 바랬다.

텅 빈 마음 속에 무언가를 채워넣기를, 바랬던 것이다.

"소중한 존재를 원해."

"소중하게 여겨지고 싶어."

행복해지고싶어. 미래를 원해.
살아가고 싶어.

그것이 나의 본심.

이런 건 즐겁지않아.

즐길 수 없어.

즐길 수 없지만.

'해내지 않으면, 미래 따위는 없겠지….'

자기자신에게 용기를 주는 주문을 읊듯이.
나는 나 자신을 극복해내기를 선택해야만 하는 것이다.
