적은 수의 인간이 많은 수의 짐승을 죽인다.

많은 수의 짐승이 저 자신보다 더 많은 인간을 먹어치운다.

피가 들끓고 있다.
제국의 역사에 언제나 함께 해왔던 전쟁신의 살육이 맹동한다.

이천만이 넘는 인구 수가 살고 있던 요새 도시.
그 위에서 머무르던 인구 중 절반에 가까운 수가 육편으로 화해버렸기에 당연했다.

허나 그렇다 해서 방심할 수 없으리라.
이것들은, 이런 순간에 가장 강해지는 족속이며.

대성전 당시 그 수가 십분지 일까지 줄어버린 인간이 무슨 짓을 했는지를 그는 너무나도 잘 알고 있었기에.

• • • 그리고 이 요새 도시 또한 역시나 그것이 숨겨놓은 금기를 드러냈다.

그것은 제 육신 위에 주력의 갑주를 두르지 않고 있었다.

흉포하고 이질적인 사자는 제 눈에 담긴 지성을 빛냈고.
육신 속에 틀어박혀져 있던 인간 현자들의 눈은, 그 명령에 제각기 기이한 음성을 흘려냈다.

『피 흘리는 육안(六眼)』이 진실되게 힘을 드러내는 광경이다.

ㅡ 사자의 주력은 죽어버린 현인들의 혼에 담긴 갈망을 끄집어내 세계의 이면을 엿보고 있었다.

오오오오오오옴 ㅡ ㅡ ㅡ

읊어지는 만트라가 산란하듯 빛난다.

어둠 속에서 희미하게 일렁이는 세계의 골자는 형형히 빛나고 있었고, 이내 그것에 담긴 저주를 드러낸다.

사자의 눈은 그것이 무엇인지를 보았다.

그것이 무슨 저주인지를, 그 저주의 근원지가 어디에서부터 태동한 것인지를.

그리고 더해서 저주가 도시 내에 그려지는 것이, 어떤 거대한 만다라의 일부임을 알았다.

[『붉은 피륙』이여.]

그것에 대항할 수 있을 것인가.

자문하나, 답은 영 신통치 않다.

그는 그의 육신에 파고들어오는 저주가 이미 그에게 들어선 지 오래임을 알았다.

그리고, 저주받은 피로 만들어진 법진은 그 이상의 재액일 것임을 보았다.

그렇기에 그는 자문의 방향성을 바꿨다.

[우리를 둘러싼 채 진로를 비틀고 있는 악귀들의 상대를 맡겨도 되겠느냐.]

그가 지금 해야 할 일은 무엇인가.

허리춤에서 달랑거리는 눈구멍이 텅 빈 인간의 머리통이 흔들리고, 그가 입 안에서 굴리던 눈에 담긴 비명이 그의 생각을 반추한다.

으적인다.

핏물이 그 입 안에서 물씬 터져나올 때, 그는 답을 찾고서 웃었다.

[부디, 뜻대로 하소서.]

[만일 내가 돌아오지 못한다면.]

위험을 감수하지 않는다는 생각 따위는 존재하지도 않았다.

굶주린 채 오염된 초원을 유랑하던 어릴 적부터 지금까지, 정점에 오르고자 했던 염원은 그 무게를 알고 있었다.

사냥하는 자는 그 어느 순간에라도 사냥당할 위험을 감수해야 하는 법.

[무리를 거두고 물러나, 용공주에게 의탁하여라.]

그럼에도 불구하고 이기는 것이 자신임을 확신하며 ㅡ 그것의 발걸음이 바닥을 박찬 순간.

도시가 흔들렸다.

섬광과도 같은 빛이 출현하면서.

유성이, 지저에서 중력을 거슬러 오르며 솟구쳤다.
