사부리류는 일본에 남은 얼마 안 되는 창술 전문 유파 중 하나이다.
일본에서 전국시대에 등장한 건창이라는 독특한 창을 사용하는데,
특히 자기네 유파의 철학인 <창은 베는 것, 검은 찌르는 것>이라는 사상에 따라 건창도 보통 건창과는 완전히 다른,
2척 1촌(63.6cm)의 거대한 양날을 가진 9척(2.72m)짜리 창을 사용한다.

거기에 전쟁터에서의 창술임을 강조하며, 시연할 때는 보통 갑옷을 입고 시연한다.
창술의 움직임도 일반적인 창술과는 완전히 달라서 기본 자세가 상단이고, 상대의 창을 갈고리로 걸어 치워버린 다음 베는 식의 카타(形)를 가지고 있다.
같은 건창끼리의 대결이 아닌 일반 창, 도검과 건창의 대결을 상정하며 일반 창과 도검을 봉쇄하고 제압하는 데에 훈련 내용의 대부분을 할애한다.
또 카타의 마지막에는 상대의 창을 감는 동작을 취하면서 제자리로 돌아가는 것이 많은 것도 특징이다.
