"쥐고기만 먹다 진짜 질릴 지경이야."

모그의 한마디는 그 자리에 있던 모두의 심정을 잘 대변했지만,
정작 그는 꼬치에 꿰어 구운 쥐고기를 여전히 쿡쿡 찌르며 굽고 있었다.
모닥불 건너편에서 로블은 얼굴을 찌푸렸다.
크룰보이즈에게 실용주의는 당연한 생존 방식이었지만,
그래도 최소한의 신념은 지켜야 하는 법이다.

"먹을 게 쥐뿐이잖아."
로블의 왼쪽에 앉은 브로그는
종양투성이 쥐고기를 한 입 물고 말했다.
"그나마 낚시질해서 물고기라도 건질 수 있으면 모를까,
저 물은 보기만 해도 쎄하다."

아무도 물고기 낚겠다고 나서지 않았다.
그래서 이 전투 집단은 자기들끼리
자신들을 **‘섬프 도그즈(Sump Dogz)’**라고 부르며,
바닷가 동굴의 가장 깊숙한 곳,
산성의 파도가 뒤엎는 해안을 피해
안쪽에 웅크리고 있었다.

무리들은 각자의 모닥불 주위에 쭈그려 앉아,
서로를 노려보며 낮은 목소리로 중얼거렸다.
가끔가다 데프스파이커즈가
장비를 만지작거리며 튕기는 짜증나는 소리가 났고,
습기 찬 동굴 안에는
무언가 잘못된 썩은 내음이 진동했다.
악독한 쥐들이 몰래 다가와
오루크들의 살을 깨물고 뜯어가기도 했다.
